DOLE to charter over 300 Filipino teachers to China

As the global labor market gradually reopens its doors amid the COVID-19 pandemic, over 300 Filipino teachers will be sent by the Department of Labor and Employment (DOLE) to China through a chartered flight, an official said Friday.

This was confirmed by DOLE International Labor Affairs Bureau (ILAB) director Alice Visperas in a virtual forum, saying more than 300 Filipino teachers will fly to Guangzhou “hopefully this month” to resume their jobs.

“Mayroon tayong mga tinulungan na mga kababayan natin na returning workers going to China,” Visperas said.

The DOLE official said Labor Secretary Silvestre Bello III is already coordinating with the Philippine Airlines to schedule a chartered flight for the Filipino teachers.

“Iba sa kanila ay nagbakasyon lamang o nag-finish na ang contract nila,” Visperas said, noting that the overseas workers were not able to return to their jobs due to travel restrictions during the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic.

The Labor official noted that more than 260,000 OFWs were repatriated and 100,00 more need to return home.

She said more than 300,000 OFWs have been granted financial assistance of $200 each through the DOLE’s Abot Kamay ang Pagtulong (AKAP) program.—AOL, GMA News
