MANILA, Philippines – President Rodrigo Duterte said it was impossible for him to commit the same mistake made by former Colombian president Cesar Gaviria in their war against illegal drugs, adding that their situation was different and that their characters are not alike.

In his speech at a business forum in Davao City on Friday, Duterte again slammed Gaviria for saying in his opinion piece in the New York Times that Duterte was repeating the same mistake he made when he launched his war on drugs in Colombia, which eventually failed and created more problems, because a war on drugs waged through force of arms is “unwinnable.”

But Duterte said the situation between the Philippines and Colombia is different, in that the United States helped Colombia because it was affected by the drug problem of the Latin American country whereas the US was criticizing the Philippines’ war on drugs.

Duterte also said he was totally different from Gaviria.

“That (repeating Gaviria’s mistake) is only possible, Mr. ex-president, if I am as stupid as you. But unfortunately, I’m not,” Duterte pointed out.
