Senate President Aquilino “Koko” Pimentel III on Friday confirmed that officials of the Partido Demokratiko Pilipino-Lakas ng Bayan (PDP-Laban) and China’s ruling Communist Party in Beijing will meet from January 22 to 25.

Pimentel, PDP-Laban president, said the only aim of the meeting will be the “strengthening of ties” between the two parties.

“Very simple objective only,” he told reporters in a text message Friday.

Pimentel, however, did not give other details about the meeting, saying it is an internal party matter.

“This is an internal party matter which we want to keep ‘internal’ as there will be no adverse effect on the State whatsoever. Hence, this is not an ‘issue’ of national concern,” he said.

The upcoming meeting between PDP-Laban officials and their counterparts from the Communist Party came to light after former Philippine Amusement and Gaming Corporation (Pagcor) chairman Efraim Genuino disclosed it in the motion he filed with the Sandiganbayan dated Jan. 10 for permission to travel.

Genuino, who is facing multiple criminal charges connected to his stint as Pagcor chair, said he was invited to join the PDP-Laban delegation as he heads the party’s finance committee.

The PDP-Laban delegation to China will be led by the party’s vice chairman, Energy Secretary Alfonso Cusi. — VVP, GMA News
