Maute matriarch, 10 others transferred to Camp Bagong Diwa

Authorities have transferred to Camp Bagong Diwa the 11 individuals, including the mother of the Maute brothers and a former mayor, charged with rebellion over the deadly attacks in Marawi City.

Ominta Romato Maute, also known as Farhana, and former Marawi City mayor Fajad Salic, were flown to Manila on Monday after they underwent inquest proceedings at Camp Evangelista in Cagayan De Oro City, according to Justice Secretary Vitaliano Aguirre II on Thursday.

Also brought to Camp Bagong Diwa’s Special Care Intensive Area were Sumaya Bangkit Masakal, Radiea Tugosa Asire, Mariam Ibnu Abubakar, Zafeerah Rosales Musa, Nehreen Macaraya Abdul, Nora Moctar Limgas, Mardiyya Haji Ali, Sumayya Lawi Ali, and Noronisa Haji Camal.

Government prosecutors earlier indicted the 11 individuals before the Misamis Oriental Regional Trial Court over allegations they had connived with the ISIS-inspired Maute group who are “now actively engaged in an armed rebellion against the government.”

Farhana, mother of Maute group founders Omar and Abdullah who led the attacks in Marawi on May 23, is said to be the financier of the extremist group.

She is the first wife of Cayamora Maute, who was arrested at a checkpoint in Davao City on June 6 and is now detained at Camp Bagong Diwa.

Farhana was arrested in Masiu, Lanao del Sur on June 9 while Salic was nabbed  on June 7 at a checkpoint in Barangay San Martin in Villanueva, Misamis Oriental. —Virgil Lopez/RSJ, GMA News
