Phoenix Fuelmasters interim head coach Topex Robinson could not hold back his tears when he talked about Calvin Abueva after winning against Magnolia on Friday.
“I think one of the big reasons for us not to give up is it’s really hard to leave the gym or hotel knowing that one of your sons is not with you,” Robinson emotionally said in the post-game interview.
Phoenix mounted a comeback against Magnolia to notch their third win, 91-84.
For Robinson, they are doing everything for Abueva, who is also in the Philippine Basketball Association’s bubble while waiting for the green light to play.
“It’s really hard because he wants to play and he wants to contribute. But the best thing that he could do is cheer for us, and it’s hard for a coach to always leave the gym or the hotel knowing that one of your sons is not there with you in this battle,” the Phoenix tactician said.
“He doesn’t wanna give up so we always do it for Calvin,” Robinson added.
After losing their two previous games, Robinson said, “We don’t want to lose again and go back to the hotel knowing that Calvin wants to help us, and the best thing that he could do is to just practice, cheer for us, and pray for us.”
“I love Calvin, everybody loves Calvin, we’re doing it for Calvin.”
The Games and Amusements Board has already recommended the reinstatement of Abueva’s professional playing license. However, there is no official word yet from the league on the lifting of his suspension.
